# Plan your day on the hourly schedule

> Drag a task or habit from the Tasks or Habits list into an hour of your day. Hold Ctrl, or Cmd on a Mac, to place a copy, and Alt to move a whole series. The red line marks the current time, and the Now button brings you back to it.

- The arrows around the date move one day.
- Morning and Afternoon group the hours of the day.
- Each shows its hours and how many items it holds.

*Example data: Tuesday at 10:41 AM.*

## Drag a task into your day

The schedule holds your day in hours. You fill it by dragging from the lists.

*Figure: A task dragged from the Tasks list over the 12 PM block. A blue line shows where it will land. Example data.*

- **Pick it up**: Press and hold a card in the Tasks list.
- **The drop line**: The hour lights up, and a line shows where the item lands.

1. **Open Tasks**

Press `2`, or choose **Tasks** above the list.

2. **Drag a card into an hour**

Move it between two cards, or below the last one, until the line shows. Near the top or bottom edge, the schedule scrolls.

3. **Let go**

The task lands where the line was. Without the line, letting go cancels the drag and nothing changes.

> **Tip:** While you drag, hold the card over the **Tasks** or **Habits** tab for half a second to open it.

## Copy or move a series while you drag

A key held during the drag changes what the drop does.

drag: **Drag**: Task: A locked task places a copy. An unlocked task moves. Habit: From the list, opens **Schedule habit** for that day. Press **Schedule habit** to add it. On the schedule, moves it.

`Ctrl`+ drag: **Copy**: Task: Places a copy. The original stays where it was. Habit: Opens **Schedule habit** to add one more occurrence on that day.

`Alt`+ drag: **Series**: Task: Moves its future copies to the new time. Habit: From the list, starts a new schedule. On the schedule, moves the whole series.

Tasks in the list start locked. How to unlock one is in [lock the tasks you reuse](https://dabadoro.com/docs/tasks-and-topics/#lock).

`Ctrl+Z` undoes the whole drag, and `Ctrl+Shift+Z` redoes it.

## Know which hours take a drop

Plans point forward. The schedule refuses drops into time that has passed.

*Figure: Two hour blocks of today in the afternoon: 12 to 3 PM has passed and is hatched, so it takes no drops. 3 to 6 PM holds the current time and a task still to do. Example data.*

*Example data: 3:20 PM on a Tuesday.*

- Past days are read-only. To log time on one, use [Complete activity](https://dabadoro.com/docs/complete-past-days/).
- Today, hours that have passed are hatched and take no new items.
- An unfinished item whose hour has passed moves to the current hour.
- Unfinished tasks move to the next day when a day ends. Habits stay on their own day.

## Read the time line and your tracked time

Two thin lines on today's schedule tell you where you are and what you did.

*Figure: An hour block of today: the running chemistry task with the green tracked-time line beside it, and the red line at 10:41. Example data.*

- **Tracked time**: A green line beside the hours you tracked.
- **Current time**: The red line, on today only.

To hide either line, switch off [Show current time line](https://dabadoro.com/docs/settings/#show-current-time-line) or [Show tracked time](https://dabadoro.com/docs/settings/#show-tracked-time) on the Schedule tab in Settings.

When the current hour scrolls out of view, or you open another day, the Now button appears on the schedule.

*The Now button, with the current time.*

## Move between days and plan ahead

Use the arrows around the date, the week strip, or the activity heatmap.

*Figure: Part of the activity heatmap: past days shaded by how much you completed, today ringed, and the days ahead drawn as outlines you can select. Example data.*

*Part of the activity heatmap. Example data.*

The heatmap bar sits at the foot of the schedule. Days ahead are drawn as outlines. Select one to open that day and plan it.

With a day focused, the arrow keys move by day or week, and Enter or Space selects it.

> **Shortcut:** Press `Ctrl+H` to show or hide the heatmap.

The week strip and the other views are on [schedule views and layouts](https://dabadoro.com/docs/schedule-views-and-layouts/).
